About Socket Testers
Socket testers are a useful accompaniment to PAT testers as they enable the user to verify that the socket regularly used by an appliance is safe. This is particularly useful when testing largely static appliances such as kettles and vending machines that always use the same wall socket.
The instruments themselves test the wiring in sockets and relay a PASS/FAIL indication via an instantaneous LED display and often with a buzzer to indicate a fault. The nature of a fault is usually shown by different combinations of LEDs with the number of detectable faults determined by the specification of the tester. In general, more advanced testers can specify a greater number of faults.
Aside from checking wiring and polarity in 230V UK wall sockets, certain socket testers are suitable for testing industrial and construction sockets with 110V, 230V, or 415V outputs. Some testers are even capable of performing earth loop and RCD testing. The most advanced models are suitable for three-phase testing.
